Movie Review: Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2 (2025)

“After the smash-hit success of the first film, Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2 levels up in every way—bigger, funnier, and more visually dazzling, while also giving fans deeper lore and a surprisingly heartfelt story.

The plot kicks off with Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) enjoying their well-earned peace in the Mushroom Kingdom, only for a new threat to emerge from the depths: Bowser (Jack Black), still licking his wounds, joins forces with a mysterious villain from another realm—Wario (voiced with mischievous brilliance by Pedro Pascal). What follows is a wild adventure across new worlds, from the deserts of Sarasaland to the galaxy-spanning chaos of Rosalina’s Comet Observatory.

The voice cast is excellent once again. Pratt and Day double down on their brotherly chemistry, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach gets even more screen time as a confident leader, and Jack Black’s Bowser continues to steal scenes with both menace and comedic flair (yes, there’s another unforgettable Bowser song). The biggest surprise is Wario—Pascal brings a mix of slimy charm and unpredictable energy that makes him a perfect foil for Mario.

Animation-wise, the movie is stunning. Illumination and Nintendo clearly spared no expense: every frame bursts with color, detail, and Easter eggs. From 2D-style platforming sequences recreated in 3D glory to cosmic set pieces that feel ripped from Super Mario Galaxy, the film is a love letter to decades of Mario games.

Beyond the spectacle, the film has heart. At its core, it’s about family—Mario and Luigi learning to trust each other in even bigger ways, Peach facing the weight of leadership, and even Bowser dealing with the hilariously awkward side of rejection. Kids will laugh nonstop, while longtime fans will appreciate the deeper nods to Nintendo lore.

If there’s a flaw, it’s that the movie tries to juggle too many side characters—Yoshi, Daisy, and Rosalina sometimes get less time than they deserve. But the pacing rarely drags, and the energy stays high from start to finish.

The finale, a cosmic-scale battle against Bowser and Wario, is pure Nintendo magic—equal parts thrilling and hilarious. The post-credits scene (teasing Donkey Kong Country) will have fans buzzing.

Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2 is everything a sequel should be: bigger, bolder, and bursting with love for its source material. It’s a must-see for families, gamers, and anyone who just wants to have fun at the movies.
